How Port Address Translation (PAT) works and Configuration !!

Port address translation is another variation of NAT and the most popular one and this is the one maximum people are using in the industry. It is also called NAT Overloading because it is designed to map many IP addresses to just a single registered IP address (overloaded address) by applying different port addresses in the TCP or UDP header.

Configuration:

R1:

R1(config)#ip nat inside source list 1 pool NAT_POOL

!!! Access-list 1 used to match Inside Local subnet

R1(config)#ip nat inside source list 1 interface fastEthernet 0/1 overload

!!! Defining Inside Network and Outside Network

R1(config)#interface fastEthernet 0/1
R1(config-if)#ip nat outside

R1(config-if)#interface fastEthernet 0/0
R1(config-if)#ip nat inside
